The science bit .....

Friday 2nd May

I had to go back to the hospital today as the Seroma blew up again. It was really uncomfortable and I have struggled to do my exercises. Again the amount drained off was shocking. Such a relief to have it drained though.

Thought I would give you a bit more info about the cancer I have (or had!). Its called Triple Negative, this basically means that it is not hormone receptive as most breast cancers are.  Triple negative is quite rare (I like to be different) and equates to just 10-15% of breast cancers. Triple negative is a tricky one because it is not clear what this cancer feeds off. My research suggests that it has something to do with Insulin levels. Hence the faddy diet. Dairy, animal fats and sugar raise your insulin levels making a perfect breading ground for cancer cells to grow. These foods also encourage ALL cells to grow and reproduce including cancer cells. Stress and anxiety can also raise your insulin levels through the roof, which I believe (and research suggests) is why so many people are diagnosed with cancer after a stressful life event. I have always believed that stress can cause cancer.

Triple Negative is also linked to the BRACA 1 gene which I will be tested for once treatment is done and dusted. The Oncologist seemed to think that it is likely I have this gene due to me being diagnosed at a young age. BRACA 1 does not mean you will get breast cancer but makes it more likely.

The trouble with Triple Negative is that it is more likely to come back than hormone receptive cancer.  However they reckon that if it does not come back within 8 years it probably won't come back at all.  Triple negative can be treated with Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy only. Hormone Therapy will not work in my case. Therefore I will continue with my faddy diet so that my body remains a cancer free zone.

I had a call from Clatterbridge today. They want to start treatment on Monday the 12th. My pre assessment will take place on Wednesday. Although I do want to get on with it this sent me into a bit of a panic.  I have been referred to the Fertility Clinic to freeze some eggs as Chemo is likely to affect fertility.  Trouble is I haven't got an appointment with them yet, so they need to get a move on.  I very much doubt this will be sorted by the 12th. I'm not stressing about the egg freezing situation as I don't have a burning desire to have kids.  I don't want cancer to take the choice away from me though. Also you never know I may change my mind in the future. I may come out of this and decide I want children. Can't see it myself but I suppose you never know. Would have to meet a bloke who isn't a complete prick first!! Pffft!! No offence lads.

My mobility is getting better, my right arm is pretty much back to normal but my left is struggling to keep up. I will be able to drive in another three weeks, I just hope my arm sorts itself out so I can.

(The information I have provided on Triple Negative Breast Cancer is my understanding of it and therefore may not be accurate as I am not a medical professional)
